Real-Life Math -- Solution

Here's how to figure out what it will cost you:

Airfare: $1,100
Transportation to and From Naeba: $500
Hotels: $2,100
Airport Tax: $50
Food: $1,000
Total: $4,750

If you win, you can make:

Prize Money: $5,000
Money From Bonus Schedule:
Snowboard Sponsor: $5,000
Goggle Sponsor: $2,000
Money for One Picture in Magazine: $500
Total: $12,500

If you place second:

Prize money: $3,500
Money From Sponsors: $500
Total: $4,000

If you placed third:

Prize Money: $1,500
Money From Sponsors: $500
Total: $2,000

Therefore, if you won the event you would make:

(Earnings) - (Expenses) = (Net gain)
12,500 - 4,750 = $7,750

If you came in second:

(Earnings) - (Expenses) = (Net loss)
4,000 - 4,750 = -$750

If you came in third:

(Earnings) - (Expenses) = (Net Loss)
2,000 - 4,750 = -$2,750

You would have to win the event in order to make any money.
