Before you get hired to write a story, you have to write a query letter. In it, you briefly tell the editor the topic of your story and the expected length. Make sure your subject is clear and that it will catch the editor's attention. Explain who your sources will be and why you're qualified to write the story.

You live in Denver, Colorado. There's a 16-year-old girl in your town who's an avid mountain climber. Tina Lang has been climbing since she was nine. Now, she's planning to tackle the biggest challenge of all: Mount Everest. If she succeeds, she'll be the youngest American to ever scale the peak.

Lang plans to leave next June. Local companies are planning to sponsor her and the rest of her climbing team.

You think this would make a great 2,000-word story for Ambition magazine. You will focus on the preparations leading up to the climb and how supportive the town is being. Write a query letter to the editor, Jay Waters.
