Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You go ahead and run the sample.

You've saved some time, but you've risked reporting a false result. This can have very serious consequences, not the least of which is the loss of your job!

"If you haven't made sure your analytical system is clean, that could have been in there from some other sample you ran or it could be residual," says Donald Cortes. He's a lab director. "A result like that could cost a manufacturer a lot of money, because he'll think he has a problem that he doesn't."

Safety and accuracy are of primary concern. The decisions of a lab chief have serious consequences.

"It could be severe," Cortes says. "And there are some things that are known to be more critical than other things. In general, of course, you want to err on the side of safety. You want to make sure somebody isn't hurt because you make a mistake."
