Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You're an ER nurse dealing with two possible rabies cases.

Sandra

Sandra has just been bitten in the face by her dog Brutus. Brutus is up to date with all of his shots. The wound needs to be cleaned and the debris must be removed from her face. Because the wound is on her face, you take extra care cleaning because stitches will mostly likely be needed. You don't recommend a rabies shot because Brutus has been vaccinated. You alert the local health authorities about the bite.

Joey

Joey has been playing in a cave near his campsite. Something swooped out of the darkness and attacked his shoulder. The wound isn't deep.

You clean and remove debris from the wound. The wound is small and doesn't require stitches. You suspect the wound is from a bat, so you're concerned about the possibility of rabies. Joey is in a prime age category for contracting rabies, so he's evaluated and a shot is administered. You report the bite to the local health authorities.

You neatly write on the patients' charts what you've done. "You need to be proficient in spelling and grammar," says Willard. "If a chart goes to court for whatever reason, it really blows your credibility as a professional if you have a ton of spelling errors and it's illegible!"
