Manufacturing Manager

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Communication

You are a manufacturing manager at a plant that makes promotional advertising items. You have recently started the position and have not yet been completely accepted by the workforce.

You are planning to make some major changes to the factory, including buying new equipment. That will mean retraining and possible changes in job categories and shifts, which may disrupt some employees' lives.

Review the following draft memo, which is kind of stiff and formal. See if you can make it sound friendlier and more positive by using words that imply an invitation rather than an order. If you notice any typos or misspellings along the way, please correct them.

Dear Employees,

As your new manager, I'm planning to restructure the entire department. This will mean job changes for some of your, schedule changes for others of you, and complete retraining on new equipment so you can be productive. The training will be conducted on Saturdays -- no acceptions.

I have schedule a meeting for Friday afternoon to explain all of these changes to you. Please remain seated at your stations at 4:30 p.m. on that day and I will come and announce the new structure. Thank you.
