Real-Life Decision Making

Journalists make many decisions every day. Should this story run in tomorrow's paper? Should this one lead the newscast or come near the end? Should this picture run or is it too graphic?

You are doing a lengthy interview with the president of a local college. The discussion is about the upcoming opening of a business school at the college campus. You find the man intelligent, witty and comfortable to be with.

You conclude the formal part of the interview. He offers to walk across campus with you on your way back to the office. You are strolling down a tree-lined path when he says that the biggest mistake the college ever made was to admit women.

You don't believe your ears. But then he restates his position. "It's a distraction for everyone," he says. Then he quickly adds, "This is off the record, right?"

You are so shocked you can't react right away, but you have to say something. All comments made to a reporter are generally on the record. That is, they can be printed or broadcast unless stated otherwise in advance. In other words, you can't take something off the record after the fact.

What do you do?
