Real-Life Math

You are a facility designer. You are working on designing a new library. Right now, you're figuring out what to put on the floors. The client wants carpets, but you want tile flooring. You say it would look better and last longer.

The problem is that the client wants the cheaper option. Carpet would cost $12 per square foot, including installation. The tile would cost $15 per square foot, including installation. The floor you have to cover measures 3,700 square feet.

You estimate maintenance costs for the carpet at $500 per year for cleaning and wear and tear. Maintenance of a tile floor would be $100 per year for cleaning and wear and tear.

You have to figure out if carpet or tile is the cheaper option.

To begin with, figure out the initial cost of installation. Then figure out the cost of maintenance over 10 years. So, which is the best option for your client?
