Employee Benefits Coordinator

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Decision Making

You are an employee benefits coordinator for a gas company that detects and fixes gas leaks in many different kinds of buildings and out in the field. It is often dangerous work. Although your company does all that it can to promote safety, accidents do happen.

Last week, Joe slipped and fell as he was climbing up a ladder and seriously fractured his lower leg. Because he works in the field, he won't be able to go back to his regular job for a few months. You have sorted out his injury benefits, but they provide far less than he usually earns.

He wonders if he could have a desk job at the company while his leg heals.

Unfortunately, there is no office job available. In fact, the office staff was recently reduced, due to financial cutbacks.

But you could reduce Ruth's hours from full time to part time, in order to give Joe some office work. After all, Ruth is new to the company and is young and single. Joe has been working for the company for 15 years and has a family.

What do you do?
