Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

Report the personal expenses to upper management

You decide to report the personal expenses.

This is the decision accountant Tarsha Jacobs would make. She's an auditor who works with government bodies and nonprofit agencies.

"If you find something inappropriate then it's your job to go to management and say, 'I noticed someone is charging something from Macy's (for example).'" Jacobs says that sticking to the rules might hurt your relationship with employees who are bending rules, but the consequences of not reporting transgressions are much more serious.

"If management discovers that you found it and didn't report it, then it could be a loss of that client, or it could be a reprimand from your employer (the accounting firm)."

If you don't report a particularly serious matter, you could be fired by the accounting firm, and even investigated by your professional association. You could lose your professional designation!
