Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You have the patient stop the testing immediately in case there really is a problem with her heart.

Making decisions is extremely common in an exercise physiologist's job, says Barbara Bushman, an exercise physiologist.

In this particular patient's case, it would be your responsibility as a trained exercise physiologist to know when to stop the testing. Since ischemia can lead to serious problems such as stroke or heart attack, an exercise physiologist must know the symptoms and be able to make a decision immediately in order to prevent any serious health damage.

This was definitely the case with the patient who was performing the GXT on the treadmill.

"These kinds of decisions must be made quickly based on accurate measurements of the patient's response to the exercise," says Bushman. "Exercise physiologists have to be able to think on their feet."
