Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here are some good questions to start with:

  • What were you doing right before you came to see me?
  • Has anything stressful happened to you lately?
  • Do you understand the directions that came with your prescription?
  • Have you been taking the medication as your doctor directed?
  • Are you feeling any side-effects from your medication?

By asking these questions, you discover your patient has just come from another medical appointment, which was traumatic for her. You also discover your patient is angry and worried, because her family has decided she can no longer live alone and has arranged for her to live in a senior's complex.

She tells you that, although the medication didn't bother her, she decided to take it only when she wasn't feeling well. This means she hasn't been taking her medication regularly, as she should have been.

By asking the right questions, you've found out more in 10 minutes than any physical tests could have told you.

These are the real-life communication skills used by nurse practitioner Peggi Snyder in this situation. "Nurse practitioners have to examine patients' lives as a way to determine illness," says Snyder.
