Real-Life Math -- Solution

You prescribe a dosage of painkiller called Nopain for your patient Christine. You recommend that Christine take 30 mg of Nopain every 4 hours.

  1. If each of Christine's pills contains 15 mg of the drug Nopain, how many pills should she take over a 24-hour period?
Number of pills = (24 hours in a day / 4 hours between doses) x (30 mg per dose / 15 mg per pill)
    Number of pills = 6 x 2
    Number of pills = 12

She should take 12 pills per day.
  2. Christine took 4 of the pills every 4 hours for 1 day. In the 24-hour period, did she exceed the maximum dosage of Nopain?
    Total dosage = (24 hours in a day / 4 hours between doses) x (4 pills x 15 mg per pill)
    Total dosage = 6 x 60 mg
    Total dosage = 360 mg

Christine did take more than the maximum dosage. She should talk to a doctor.
