Real-Life Decision Making

Marine mechanics have to have good decision-making skills. A wrong turn of the wrench or a wrong diagnosis of a problem can be serious. "The worst scenario is that people die," says Earl Carroll, a marina owner. "The boat breaks down, the weather gets bad and that's it. You are gone." A mistake may also cause significant financial loss and environmental damage.

You are a marine mechanic. A customer approaches you. He says that the engine of his boat is busted. You check it out, and you find that the starter is broken. You tell this to your customer. You also quote him a price for a new one.

But your customer is not impressed. He says he cannot afford to buy a brand new starter. So he asks you if you could put in a used one. You have a used one, but you are not sure if you should put it in.

What do you do?
