Accuracy is important for a meter reader. Errors in meter readings can cost either the company or the customer a lot of money.

"Readers who record their readings on sheets would require some arithmetic," says meter reader Mark Willis. "We are given high and low reading parameters, so readers need to be able to calculate if a reading is, say, less than 5 kiloliters greater than the previous reading, or 500 kiloliters more than the previous reading."

Look at the following meter readings. They represent the number of electricity kilowatt hours used by a customer during both peak and off-peak hours. How many total kilowatt hours did this customer use this month?

Peak reading:

00343 (current)
00186 (last month)

Off-peak reading:

00284 (current)
00130 (last month)
