Real-Life Math

Geological engineers use a great deal of math and calculus. "You have to have a really strong grasp of math to be able to do calculus and physics," says geological engineer Ken Simonar.

In addition to knowing all about soil science and engineering, geological engineers need to know how minerals are measured and weighed. In some cases this means knowing how to calculate weight for precious stones such as diamonds.

While doing research for a company that was considering building a mine, you discover what you think may be rich deposits of diamonds. You've alerted the company about the discovery, and they've asked you to find out some information about diamond production.

The weight of rough and cut stones is given in carats (ct.) -- there are 142 carats to 1 ounce.

Part A

If the world production of gems is 15,873 pounds, how many carats would this be? If 95 percent of the world gem production is diamonds, how many carats of diamonds would be produced?

Part B

The largest diamond ever found was the Cullinan diamond, which weighed 3,106 carats. How many ounces did this diamond weigh? The Cullinan diamond was cut into 2 large stones weighing 530 and 317 carats -- as well as 100 other smaller stones. What was the weight of the 2 large stones in ounces?
