Real-Life Math -- Solution

You've been asked to do a bit of research into world diamond production. Because gems are measured in carats instead of ounces, you have to convert a few of the weights so that you know both the weight of stones in ounces and in carats.

Part A

If the world production of gems is 15,873 pounds, how many carats of gems would this be?

16 ounces = 1 pound
15,873 pounds x 16 = 253,968 ounces
142 carats = 1 ounce
? carats = 253,968 ounces x 142
253,968 x 142 = 36,063,456 carats

The world production of gems is 36,063,456 carats. If 95 percent of the world gem production is diamonds, how many carats of diamonds would be produced?

36,063,456 carats of gems x 0.95 = 34,260,283 carats

The world production of diamonds would be 34,260,283 carats.

Part B

The largest diamond ever found was the Cullinan diamond, which weighed 3,106 carats. How many ounces did this diamond weigh?

142 carats = 1 ounce
3,106 carats = ? ounces
3,106/142 = 21.9 ounces

The Cullinan diamond weighed 21.9 ounces. It was cut into 2 large stones weighing 530 ct. and 317 ct. What was the weight of the 2 large stones in ounces?

142 carats = 1 ounce
530 / 142 = 3.7 ounces
317 / 142 = 2.2 ounces

The 2 stones weigh 3.7 ounces and 2.2 ounces each.

"For this work you need to have good statistical skills, use of calculus, plus all other kinds of math such as figuring out weights and measures," says Simonar. "It's a skill you use all the time."
