Real-Life Decision Making

You are teaching the food and nutrition component of a Grade 8 home economics class.

It is your job to decide upon the curriculum. That is, you must decide what you will teach. You have three possible subjects but you can only choose two.

Basic nutrition teaches students the proper foods they should be eating for good nutrition and good health.

Food preparation teaches the students cooking skills -- skills that will be useful for the rest of their lives.

Table service teaches students how to set a table nicely, how to serve food and how to present food attractively. Many students in your class will be looking for part-time work at restaurants in your area. You know this subject will be very helpful to them.

The students prefer to study food preparation and table service. Basic nutrition is not popular and many moan and groan when they hear it mentioned.

However, you have noticed that many of your students eat unhealthy foods regularly, and you are worried that they may be developing eating patterns that will create health problems for them later on.

On the other hand, food preparation is a valuable skill for them to learn, and table service will help them find the weekend jobs they want.

What do you do?
