House and Structural Mover

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Math

As the foreman of a moving crew, you are often required to perform calculations using basic math.

You must be able to work with hydraulic jacks. When you are working with larger structures, the situation gets more complicated. Sometimes your employer consults with structural engineers before attempting the move.

This morning, however, your crew has been sent to move a 90-ton submarine. You must jack the vessel up in the air, fit dollies under it and truck it to a barge. To do this, you will have to know the circumference and area of the vessel.

The submarine has a diameter of 12 feet. What is the circumference? What is the area?
