You're experimenting with flowers of 3 different colors: red, orange and yellow. As a geneticist, you know that all individuals have 2 copies of a given gene. (An individual is a single plant, human or animal.) One of the copies might be defective, like when a person has a genetic disorder such as cystic fibrosis.

In this case, you have a population of 100 individuals. You're looking at alternative forms of a gene, called alleles.

The 2 types of alleles for the flowers are indicated by either a big A or a little A. The types of alleles are broken down as follows:

Red: aa (two little A's)
Orange: Aa (big A and little A)
Yellow: AA (two big A's)

If your population consists of 18 red, 24 orange and 58 yellow, how many little A's are there and how many big A's are there?
