You are a customs broker. Clients from all over the world need to ship goods through your country's waters. "I speak with people from around the world every day," says Gary French. He is a customs broker in California. "You hear different voices and think in different currencies."

For each shipment, you must figure out the duties and tariffs (taxes) that will be charged. This is part of the landed cost of the goods.

Because goods are passing across international borders, you often have to convert money into common currencies. "We use math on a daily basis to calculate various costs and to give accurate quotes to our clients," says Betty Victory, a customs broker.

Questions:

  1. If the cost of importing a shipment of apples into the U.S. from Canada is $320 Cdn, how much will it cost in U.S. dollars?
  2. If the cost of importing a shipment of wool clothing into the U.S. from Britain is 120 British pounds, how much does it cost in U.S. dollars?

Exchange rates:
$0.83 US = $1 Cdn
$1.93 US = 1 British pound
