Being comfortable with numbers and math is essential for sheet metal workers.

"In our industry you have to be very precise. Your math skills are tested every day," says Rosalind Raymond of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association.

For instance, sheet metal workers have to be able to work in both imperial and metric measurement systems. Although many fields are using the world trade standard of metric, many trades still use imperial for day-to-day work.

"We haven't switched to metric yet, so when we add measurements we use fractions a lot," says sheet metal worker Don Powell.

You are putting together a ventilation system for a building.

Note that 1 of the rectangular steel ducts needs to be 3 feet wide on the top and bottom, 2 feet wide on the sides, and 12.5 feet long.

Only 1 end of the duct is closed off.

How much sheet metal will you need to make the duct?

Hint: First you have to figure out the area of each wall of the duct. Remember, the formula for area is: area = length x width.
