Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You insist on doing the root canal.

You tell the patient you'll set up a payment plan and you don't care how long it takes him to pay it off, but you're not going to pull his tooth.

Although you feel you're acting in his best interest, your patient doesn't see it that way. He insists he can't afford the root canal and tells you he doesn't appreciate being pressured into spending more money. He says he will find a new dentist and tell everyone he knows about your "pressure tactics."

You feel badly that this patient thinks money was your motive. You feel even worse about what this will do to your reputation as a dentist in a small town.

"In situations like this, all you can do is offer suggestions to people and advise them as to the best treatment and consequences. You allow them to make up their own minds, even though it may be a compromise," says dentist Hor Tak D. Zung.
