Real-Life Math

You are a self-employed tutor. Your clients are high school students who require some extra help with math and science. Since you are self-employed, you must look after all the business details as well as do the tutoring.

You are responsible for keeping track of the number of hours that you have tutored each client and for sending them an invoice at the end of each month. You charge $15 per hour for your tutoring and are required by law to collect 7 percent tax on the amount billed to each client. You set this tax money aside and send the yearly total to the government before Dec. 31.

It is now the end of the month, and you are going over your records and getting your invoices ready to send out to your clients.

During this month, you have provided Robert Smith with 6.5 hours of tutoring. You have provided Chelsea Adams with 3 hours of tutoring, and you have tutored the Black twins for 12 hours. Since you see the Black twins together, you have given them a discount of 15 percent off the hourly fee per student. Also this month, you spent $25 to place an advertisement of your tutoring service in a small local newspaper.

  • How much should you invoice each of your students?
  • How much tax money must you set aside for the government?
  • What is your gross income this month? (Gross income is the amount of money you make before you pay expenses.)
  • What is your net income? (Net income is the amount of money you make after business expenses are paid.)
