Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You tell Jason that you will be notifying his parents of the missed sessions.

You say, "I'm sorry, but I am obligated to let your parents know that you are not showing up. I suggest that you might want to talk to them about this tonight yourself, and that way, when I phone tomorrow, it won't be a surprise to them. It might be better if they hear it from you first."

Jason is visibly upset and doesn't promise to speak to his parents. The next day when you phone them, they are surprised to discover what is happening. You offer to reschedule Jason for a different appointment time if that will help.

Jason drops out of tutoring, but his parents understand that the situation was not of your making, and they appreciate your honesty in letting them know. They recommend you to some other families who are looking for a tutor and you get some new students.

"Situations like this are tricky," says tutor Nathan Linders, "because it damages your relationship with your student. But I would never bill or accept payment for time that I didn't work." Linders also believes that you should make sure your student understands that you will be talking to his parents and give him or her the chance to do it first.
