Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You admit you don't know and tell him you want to do more tests.

You hate to do it, but you admit to your patient that you can't say for sure what the results are. You tell him you'd like to do another test. He seems frustrated by this, but agrees.

Further testing shows there is no pathology (disease) in the lung. The darkened area was caused by the patient's heavy smoking. You've spared him a hospital stay and a lot of worry.

This is what Dr. Larry Muroff would do.

"Often...we can see there's something there, but you're not sure what it is," says Muroff. He says a lot of things, such as smoking or asthma, can cause abnormalities to show up with this type of test. Still, Muroff adds, "It's very difficult for a doctor to say, 'I don't know.'"
