Real-Life Communication -- Solution

While you realize this is a sensitive issue, you do not want to compromise your integrity as a food inspector or the safety of consumers in the area. You speak to Roy in a clear and professional manner, without sounding accusing.

"We have received several reports, Mr. Thompson, that your rutabagas are showing surface injuries to their lower halves. Often, this indicates a kind of worm injury caused by the cabbage root maggot.

"This is the larva of a fly slightly smaller than a housefly. When the adult lays its eggs in the soil next to the rutabaga, the egg hatches and the larva feeds off the root under the soil.

"Mr. Thompson, while I'm happy to report that I've found no evidence of maggots in your soil, I advise you to keep close records of injuries to your rutabagas in the future. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me."

Ivor Wright is a regional coordinator with a food inspection agency. Situations like this, says Wright, aren't always amicable. "If you're saying that something has to be disposed, you're saying, 'Sorry, you can't sell that.' That hurts right in the pocketbook," he explains.
