Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You tell the customer he's wrong and ask him not to be so rude.

You can't believe that he would accuse you of damaging the package. You angrily tell him he doesn't know what he's talking about.

This makes the man even angrier. He starts shouting at you and then storms off, but not before saying he's going to get you fired.

At the end of the day, your supervisor wants to talk to you. She says a customer called with a complaint. You explain exactly what happened.

Your supervisor is not impressed. She says she sympathizes with you because it was a difficult situation. However, she says next time you should stay calm and not directly disagree with the customer. You made the situation worse.

"If they're extremely upset, a bad letter carrier will get upset as well," says postal carrier Cherie Johnston. "A good letter carrier will try and smooth it over, and perhaps direct them to customer service."
