Orthotist Yvonne Jeffreys explains that math is very important in orthotics. "You may need to figure out what forces are deforming the body. Something is happening that is making their toe hit the ground first, for example."

She explains how to make a leg orthosis to help with deformities:

  • To begin with, take a plaster cast of the leg and cut it off of the leg.
  • Then, fill that with plaster of paris. You will have a positive mold that replicates their limb.
  • Modify that with more plaster.
  • Provide the right biomechanical forces.
  • Dry and mold at 205 C.
  • Let it cool.
  • Cut off the edges.
  • Fit the client and make sure it fits into the shoe.

You are working at a company where the machine measures temperature in Fahrenheit instead of Celsius. If you are molding a cast that needs to be at 205 C, what is the Fahrenheit temperature?

To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9, divide by 5 and then add 32.
