Real-Life Decision Making

You have just settled down on the couch in your office for a brief nap. Suddenly your pager beeps, alerting you that there is a medical emergency that requires your help.

You learn that a car accident victim has been admitted to the hospital with a severe head injury. The patient requires immediate emergency surgery. You are tired, but know that you must shake off the sleepiness to do your job.

When the patient is wheeled in, you are shocked to see that the victim is your sister's good friend. Unfortunately, you also know by looking at the patient that you won't be able to restore her to perfect health.

If she survives the operation, she will be disfigured and most likely have limited brain function. You discuss this briefly with the family. They are distraught, and say that they don't know if they want their daughter to live in this condition.

What do you do?
