Real-Life Communication -- Solution

The ultimate goal of epidemiologists is to use the facts that they've uncovered to prevent illness. They want to lead the way to healthier populations and communities.

Here's what you could say to a kindergarten class:

Good morning boys and girls! When was the last time you washed your hands? [Listen to responses.]
Did you know that washing your hands helps you stay healthy? Washing your hands is the very best way to get rid of bugs and germs that make us sick. Has anybody had a cold before? [Listen to responses.] Well, the bugs that give you a cold are called viruses. Taking a pill from the doctor won't make them go away. But you can keep them away by washing your hands.
The pills are important to get rid of another type of bug called bacteria. If we take pills from the doctor every time we have a cold, the bugs that make us sick get smart. They learn to stay alive when we take pills. So if we have bacteria bugs in the future, the pills might not help us. So we should never take pills unless we really need them.
Let's all go and line up at the sink to wash our hands with soap!
