Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a building inspector touring a building with a client who wishes to purchase an older home. You are making notes of things he will have to repair soon after he moves in.

Decking:

10 boards at $15 each
$15 x 10 = $150

7 sheets of plywood at $45
7 x $45 = $315

$315 + $150 = $465

Roof:

$50 per square foot at 12 square feet
$50 x 12 = $600

Furnace:

You want to replace the furnace, which will cost 25 per cent more than $800.
$800 x 0.25 = $200
$200 + $800 = $1,000

It will cost $1,000 to replace the furnace.

Total costs: $465 + $600 + $1,000 = $2,065

The repairs will cost about $2,065, which is not much for an older home.
