Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You choose another player with more talent.

This is the real-life decision made by Chantal Vincent in the second year of her coaching career. She decided in favor of a more talented player. The father of the boy did not bestow a generous gift on the school that year. However, a very successful fund-raising effort by the parents bolstered the sagging sports budget. Her team went on to finish second in their division that year.

"I initially felt paralyzed to act," she says. "But then [my uncle] reminded me where my true allegiance should be -- with my team. I had no idea how the boy's father would act. But I did know that a string of eventual losses would be unfair to everyone -- to the players, their parents and me. Five years later, I met the player I let go. He was very gracious and let me know that he understood the dilemma I faced then and harbored no ill will. This was good closure for me."
