Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You find a new approach.

This is the real-life decision made by senior conservator Robert Arnold.

"Decision making and problem solving is something that conservators do on a daily basis," he says. "Every conservation treatment we undertake poses a multitude of problems for which we have to determine and carry out the most appropriate solutions."

After considering the matter carefully, you decide on a less intrusive approach. Instead of covering the whole painting with adhesive, you only cover those parts of the painting that are definitely lifting. Furthermore, you pick an adhesive that is easily reversible, making it easy to remove.

To deal with the tacking, you stick fabric only to the tacking margins, where the canvas is weakest. Your solution helps preserve the painting while ensuring that, if the need arises, other conservationists can do preservation work on it in the future.
