Real-Life Decision Making

Ron, an AIDS patient, comes in for his regular acupuncture treatment to help boost his immune system.

He sits down slowly. You ask him how he is feeling today and how the treatments have been helping him. He has difficulty answering. You look closely at him and are alarmed by what you see. He has shortness of breath, a fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit and a dry cough.

These are new symptoms. You are worried that he may have pneumonia. That's very dangerous for people with AIDS.

In this case, acupuncture may help with the symptoms, but he may need other medical attention. You don't want to frighten Ron, but you don't want to neglect his health.

What do you do?
