Real-Life Communication

Peter de Jager is a management consultant who specializes in speaking on change and creativity. He says refining your public speaking skills is essential to being a management consultant.

"As a speaker, I listen more than I talk. Communication is more about knowing what to say and when to say it than anything else. Being a good communicator requires you to be part mind reader, part manipulator."

Write a short speech of three to five minutes about a topic of your choice. Make it a persuasive kind of speech, in which you're trying to convince an audience of something.

Find an audience (friends, co-workers, peers) and present your speech to them. While you're talking, see if you can tell how they're receiving your speech. Are they agreeing with you? Where do they stop paying attention or disagree with your points?

Using this insight, rewrite your speech to make it stronger. Knowing how people reacted the last time will give you clues as to how to make it better. Try out the new version. Did your listening pay off?
