Real-Life Math -- Solution

What percentage of the town's population did each segment represent in the past year? To answer that question, you must add up each segment's total for a grand total and divide each segment's total into the grand total to get the percentage.

Grand total = 23,971

Age 0 to 17
2,711 / 23,971 x 100 = 11 percent

Age 18 to 25
5,430 / 23,971 x 100 = 23 percent

Age 36 to 49
6,510 / 23,971 x 100 = 27 percent

Age 50 to 64
5,506 / 23,971 x 100 = 23 percent

Age 65 to 99
3,812 / 23,971 x 100 = 16 percent

Age 100+
2 / 23,971 x 100 = 0.008 percent

You and your co-workers can clearly see that the 36 to 49 age group represents the largest demographic in your town. Now you can use that in all your future plans.
