Real-Life Communication

"As a trainer, you have to try to get employees to learn in new and different ways," says Dave Egan, who is with an online training resource. "This requires pretty compelling communication skills."

No matter how progressive your company, there will be someone who doesn't want to participate in training. You are the training manager. Your job is to help convince them that it's in their best interest to show up at the training sessions with a positive attitude.

According to the American Society for Training and Development, there are many reasons to train employees:

  • Employees are more productive if trained on a regular basis
  • Employees who receive regular training are less likely to leave their jobs
  • Training offers employees a change from their everyday routine
  • Employees who attend voluntary training are more likely to receive promotions and pay increases

You're well aware of those facts. But getting them across to your employees is another matter.

You are preparing to write a memo announcing an upcoming voluntary training session on organizational skills. The session will be led by a leading expert on organization. It will focus on keeping a calendar, keeping a clean desk and staying organized in general.

How will you convince workers to attend? Hint: think about the objections they might have to attending and then address them directly. And don't forget to mention the refreshments.
