Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You are a pharmacologist giving a lecture about PKU. Before you tell scientists about your research and talk about your ideas for prevention, you answer some questions.

1. What causes PKU?

PKU is caused by a congenital fault in metabolizing the amino acid phenylalanine. This can cause a build up in the blood and urine, and retard mental development.

2. What can happen in undiagnosed cases or cases that are diagnosed late?

In 95 percent of the cases when PKU isn't diagnosed, the intelligence of the baby is negatively affected.

3. How can PKU be prevented in babies that exhibit the inborn metabolic error?

PKU can be prevented in babies by using early screening, and then by giving them formula low in phenylalanine.

4. How many people are carriers of the mutant gene?

About one in 60 people are carriers of the mutant gene.
