Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

Talk to the student about the problem with his remark and give him another chance.

You pull the student aside and let him know that you will not tolerate racist comments in your classroom. You are firm with the student, but you give him another chance. You explain to the whole class that different cultures see things differently and that there is no "better" culture, just different cultures.

You decide that it is best to change the topic that you are discussing, and you start to talk about places to go on vacation. Your class takes a while to recover from the event, but soon everyone is speaking again and things settle back to normal.

"You have to be careful choosing topics to discuss, because some topics can be touchy," says Sashwat Koirala. He teaches English language classes at a public school.
