Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You investigate further.

This is the real-life decision that Shirley Davis would make. She is a professor of health information management and medical coding.

"If you have a doubt, you have to get it clarified," says Davis. "It could mean fraud or abuse of the system. In these cases, it could also mean a difference of thousands of dollars in billing charges."

She says that medical coding is like detective work. You have to be able to put the correct code with the procedure, and be aware of procedures that don't seem justified or don't match up with other notes.

"If there is even a remote amount of doubt, you should check into it," she says. "Medical coders have to have good decision-making skills."

Obviously, you don't want to be too slow or inefficient in your coding. But you must always make sure that the work is accurate.
