Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are an esthetician and you're trying to figure out how much money you'll make in sales over one year.

Your minimum sales target each week is $100. You earn eight percent of what you sell. How much would you make in one year from product sales if you always met your weekly target?

8 (percent) /100 x 100 (dollars) = 8 (dollars/ week)

$8 / week x 52 weeks = $416

If you made your sales target of $100 per week, you would make $416 in a year.

In your first month on the job, you sold $112 the first week, $375 the second week, $233 the third week and $426 the fourth week. How much would you make in a year from product sales if every month were like this month?

112 + 375 + 233 + 426 = 1146 (sales this month)

8/ 100 x 1146 = $91.68 (8% of this month's sales)

$91.68 x 12 months = $1100.16

If every month's sales were like this month's, you would make $1,100.16 in a year.

"Math is very important as an esthetician, you will use it everyday. This is why there is a math class that we had to take during the course," says Amy Lee. She is an esthetician with her own traveling spa business.
