Mountain Guide

Real-Life Math

You're at the base of Mount Justice. As the wind howls around you, you fiddle with your hat. You're leading an expedition to the top of this rock. In all, there are 4 people under you. Each of the 4 is capable, well equipped and ready for the climb. Food is really the only consideration.

"The leadership takes a lot out of a person emotionally," says Maridy Loftis, a Nevada-based mountain guide. "I would say that the responsibility of 12 to 15 lives on your shoulders is the hardest part of my job."

Just before grappling with the first rock face, you all decide to pool your food. You feel somewhat comforted by this motion but are led to wonder: Is 75 units of food enough for this 5-day, 4-night climb to the top of Justice?

Here is the situation:

  • You have 4 people with you
  • You have 75 supply units of food
  • You will use 3 supply units per person per day going up
  • It will take 3 days to make it to the mountain's summit
  • You will use 2 supply units per person per day coming down
  • It will take 2 days to make it down the mountain

Will you have enough supplies?
