Trainers look after the animals they train. They are often responsible for preparing their diet and feeding them.

You are an animal trainer at a zoo. The zoo has just acquired a hippo that weighs 1,000 pounds. You don't yet have an established diet for this animal. There is not any documentation about the feeding history of the hippo. He's an adult in good health.

An animal's diet is usually determined by a percentage of its body weight. A growing animal might need to eat the equivalent of two percent of its weight daily. An adult animal needs to eat the equivalent of 1.5 percent of its weight per day, says Jason Green. He is the assistant curator of rhinos and hoof stock at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida.

How much food should you give the hippo daily?
