Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You go ahead with medical treatment.

You recommend photodynamic therapy. Since this patient has lung cancer that is malignant, and still in the early stages, you agree that she is an ideal candidate. Plus, you know that if this procedure doesn't work, you can always follow up with surgery.

You and the patient decide that medical treatment is the best solution.

As Dr. Gerald Coursley says, you don't want to perform any surgery where "the patient will not benefit and will be subject to unnecessary surgical procedure." Coursley reminds us that the main factor in making a decision such as medical treatment vs. surgical treatment is to "always bear in mind the matter of quality of life of the patient."
