You tell them to simply reply to the e-mail and ask to be removed from the mailing list, as instructed.

This is not the best solution. If you respond to unsolicited e-mail and ask to be removed from their list (although you never requested to be added in the first place), this just verifies that they've reached a "working" e-mail address. You may never get rid of them!
