Real-Life Math

To become a linguist, you might not think math is important. But some of the best linguists have strong math or scientific backgrounds, says linguistics professor Ed Burtynsky.

Irene Mazurkewich agrees. "Math will teach students analytical skills. Work as a linguist can be very analytical."

You are a linguist doing research on the speech patterns of 100 male and female children from different social and economic classes. You have settled on 5 economic groups for your research and have an equal number of boys and girls in each group.

If you have found similar language use patterns in the girls of groups 4 and 5, what percentage of all the children do these girls represent?
