Real-Life Math -- Solution

To determine the amount of antibiotic to give the panther, you must first convert his weight from pounds to kilograms.

Weight = 237 pounds / 2.2 pounds per kg
Weight = 107.7 kg

The panther weighs 107.7 kg.

Now, to determine the amount of antibiotic to administer to the panther, you must multiply its weight by the dosage.

Kilograms of weight x 1.5 cc per kilogram

Dosage = 107.7 kg x 1.5 cc per kg
Dosage = 161.5

You should give the panther 161.5 cc's of antibiotic.

"We use mathematics in the laboratory every day," says Peter Hansen. He is an animal physiologist. "For statistical analysis of data, as well as for simple calculations of dilutions required to prepare various chemical solutions, mathematics are tools you must have."
