You'd better get used to math if you want to be a hydrologist.

Hydrologists rely heavily on their ability to make calculations as they track the movement of water over long periods of time.

In your case, the construction of a pier, dock and dam system will make major changes in how water flows through the valley along a heavily populated city.

But how much? A team of hydrologists and engineers have spent several years on the problem and decided that the river valley can withstand the displacement of 440,000 gallons of water. Any more and there will be flooding.

You have been called in to evaluate the pier project and figure out how much of a change in the water flow it will cause. This is what you know about the project:

  • 15 concrete slabs make up the pier -- each one will displace 33,000 gallons of water
  • 2 cruise ship docks will be built, each one displacing 110,000 gallons of water
  • A series of 3 upstream dams will reduce the total amount of water present in the river bed by 110,000 gallons each

What will be the net increase in water displacement and will there be a flooding danger?
