Real-Life Math

"Math varies a lot depending on the area of specialization, but computer modeling is one important use," says Duncan Heron, emeritus professor of geology at Duke University.

Here is one way a geologist would use math in their everyday work.

You're looking at a geological map and need to figure out the distance between the summits of 2 different mountain ranges. The map is a small scale of the actual size of the area -- a life-size one wouldn't fit in your office!

In order to find the distance between these 2 points on the map, you have to use the conversion scale it provides. The scale is 0.5 inches of map space for every 75 miles of distance in real life.

If the distance between the 2 summits on the map is 6.7 inches, how far apart are the actual summits?
