Real-Life Math

Chief operating officers look after the future direction of the finances within a company. They use a good deal of math when they analyze financial statements.

"I analyze financial statements to see what is happening at the company," says Viola Darrington. She is a chief operating and financial officer. "I have to look at increases in revenue, and decreases in revenue. This takes math and basic algebra skills."

You look at your company's annual revenue for last year. The gross income (or total incoming dollars, without subtracting any costs) was $1.5 million. The net income (or the total amount of money left after all expenses have been paid) was $500,000.

During the first 6 months of this year, the company has a gross income of $650,000. The net income is $250,000.

You project that you will double the that gross income and the net income over the next 6 months.

Questions:

  1. If you do double them, will your gross income be greater or lesser than last year? By how much?
  2. Will your net income be lesser or greater than last year? By how much?
